I have also tried to remove the status column by right clicking the column title bar and unchecking status and it removes it but when i reopen explorer the column is right back there.
For some reason, after restarting, the status column was not showing up on the folder view I ticked the box and it appeared, but still no status icons I then restarted windows explorer and that did the trick.
