This is true for new documents and also all of my old documents that included equations

For example, in the past, if i opened the equation editor (by pressing alt +), and then i entered 3^2 followed by the space bar, this would immediately format the 2 as an exponent (i.e A superscript), while keeping the equation box open. I type many documents with microsoft word 2010 and use the equation editor 3.0 very heavily to produce mathematical expressions (windows 7) After i save the document with all of my equations in it and close out something strange happens.
