This armed attack is widely accepted as the beginning of the cuban revolution.
Attack failed from lack of coordi nation among the diverse groups commanding the assault.
The assault on the moncada barracks, in santiago de cuba, cuba, was part of an armed action carried out on july 26, 1953 by a group of young people from the orthodox party led by lawyer fidel castro in order to overthrow the dictator fulgencio batista. The moncada example led to other daring actions such as the uprising in the city of santiago de cuba on november 30, 1956 to support the landing of the yacht granma on december 2, a stepping stone to the guerrilla warfare in the sierra maestra mountains. While the moncada attack failed in fulfilling its immediate objective, it was central to the cuban people's struggle for national affirmation and social emancipation. But for a couple of mishaps they might have succeeded
For one, the car transporting their heavy weapons got lost in the departing throngs of carnival and failed to arrive in time As it turned out, the attack on fort moncada was the revolution’s first major setback and perhaps its finest hour. The attack on july 26 failed, but fidel managed to turn this military defeat into a political victory The constant frustration into which all the attempts resulted was the reason for the constant betrayal of the traditional organizations and the absence of a revolutionary leadership willing to carry out the socialist tasks with the protagonism of the working class.
